Arthur D. Fowler, 86, well known resident of Calhoun County, formerly of Jerseyville, died July 28, 1952 at Alton Memorial hospital. He had been a patient for a week following surgery. He had recently undergone successful surgery for the relief of an eye ailment and was convalescing at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Uzzell in Wood River, when other complication developed major surgery and from that he failed to rally.
Mr. Fowler was a horticulturist, preacher and lecturer on prohibition. The Fowler family had resided in Jerseyville for several years. He was a son of the late Rev. & Mrs. William Fowler and was born January 28, 1866, in Hardin.
On August 3, 1887, he married Flora Dell (Hadley). Her death occurred in 1938, one year after their 50th anniversary.
Surviving are 5 daughters, Mrs Albert Uzzell of Wood River, Mrs. G. C. Rockwood of Springfield, Mrs. O. H. Berry of Bluffs, Mrs. Clarence Skeel of San Francisco, CA, and Mrs. Kenneth Sidwell of Tempe, AZ; 4 Sons, Arthur L. Fowler of Alton, Charles P. Fowler of Springfield, William F. Fowler of Jacksonville and E. L. Fowler of Bluffs; 1 sister, Mrs. Mollie Bernsdorft of Ellinwood, KS,; 2 half sisters, Mrs. John Day of Jerseyville and Mrs. Ella Day of Hamburg; 19 grandchildren and 14 g-grandchildren.
Funeral rites were held July 31, at Hardin Presbyterian church and burial in Hardin cemetery.
