Herman M. Suhling, 71, of Hammond, and a Calhoun County native, died at Friday, March 19, 2010, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
He was born June 24, 1938 at Hillcrest in Calhoun County, a son of Charles W. and Wilhelmina B. Goetz Suhling.
He married Sandra J. Thomas Sept. 22, 1959 in Pittsfield and she survives.
Herman was a long time employee of the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, beginning his career in Pleasant Hill and retiring from the Tuscola plant.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam conflict and a life time member of the Pleasant Hill American Legion Post and also a life time member of the Harman House Museum in Pleasant Hill. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra J. Suhling of Hammond; a daughter, Debra (David) Hinds of Decatur; two granddaughters, Amanda and Chelsea Retherford; two great-grandsons, Clayton B. and Evan Michael Retherford; five sisters, Maxine Trosley of Moro, Virginia Frye of Alton, Annette Clark of Hannibal, Mo., Ann Marie Bollinger of East Alton and Rachel Asmus of Overland Park, Kan.; also two brothers, Aloys C. Suhling of St. Charles, Mo. and Roy E. Suhling of Pleasant Hill; numerous nieces and nephews; a mother-in-law, Bessie Thomas of Pleasant Hill; a brother-in-law, John Thomas of Pleasant Hill; and a sister-in-law, Georgia Smith of Granite City.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Evelyn Simmons and Betty Jean Suhling in childhood and by a brother, Virgil Suhling.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at the Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill. Burial, with military honors, followed at Crescent eights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Visitation was held Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Crescent Heights Cemetery Association, St. John's Hospice in Springfield or to the charity or organization of the donor's choice. Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill is handling the arrangements.
